The Captain Mark Garner Post 7794 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Elkin will be breaking ground on the Gold Star Families Memorial on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. in Elkin Municipal Park, 399 Hwy 268 West.

The Memorial will honor the families of those military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Nation. The monument will be erected next to the flag pole near the tennis courts.

“This monument honoring the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation means a lot to me as a Vietnam Veteran, Officer of our VFW Post and Mayor of the Town of Elkin,” said Mayor Sam Bishop. “I personally have names of classmates on the Wall in Washington and know that this monument honors their families.”

Bishop said the monument will be the first of its kind in the area.

“There is currently only one other Gold Star Families Memorial in North Carolina and that is located on the coast in Wilmington,” said Bishop.

Funds for the project were raised by the VFW Post.

“I want to thank the members of the Captain Mark Garner Post for their efforts in raising the funds to honor his family and all the Gold Star families in Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia,” Bishop added. “This is a significant accomplishment for our Post and I am proud that it is going to be built in Elkin Municipal Park.”

The public is encouraged to attend the groundbreaking ceremony as construction gets underway. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing and wear a mask or face covering.
