PARKERSBURG W.Va, (WTAP)- A special monument will be added to the memorial park at Parkersburg City Park.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon to signify the beginning of construction for a Gold Star Families Memorial at the park.
Gold Star families describe those who have lost a loved one in military service.
Officials with the project think the addition of the Gold Star monument will help those families get recognition for their sacrifice.
“The Gold Star Families in our area, and in all areas in the country, have not really had full recognition of the sacrifice that they’ve given their loved one in service to our country and we started a mission about five years ago to establish Gold Star Family memorial monuments to attempt to recognize the families that have given their loved ones in service to the country,” said Brian Casey , a board member of the Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor foundation.
City officials, Gold Star families and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel Woody Williams were among those in attendance.
