The official dedication of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument will be held at Rally Point following the Community Appreciation Picnic.

This is the first Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in the state of South Dakota.

“The dedication is to recognize this monument, which is basically honoring and recognizing Gold Star Families and their loved ones that paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Aaron Jordan, chairperson for the Gold Star Families Monument Committee, said. “That’s really on the agenda tonight (Wednesday), is to be able to honor those families and that sacrifice.”

A Gold Star family is the immediate family members of a service member who died while serving during a time of conflict.

Some faces to see at the dedication includes Mark Carstensen, Mayor of Sturgis; Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Marlette, the adjutant general for the South Dakota Army National Guard; and Denise LaRue, president of Sturgis Area Arts Council.
