BEAUFORT, CARTERET COUNTY, (WITN) A non-profit group here in the east is trying to raise money to build a monument that will honor the sacrifice that members of our military community have made and the loved ones they left behind.

It aimed to honor our veterans and preserve the memory of the bravery and sacrifice of our soldiers.

The group is called the Carteret County Gold Star Family Monument and they're hoping to raise $60,000 to build a Gold Star Family Monument at the courthouse in Carteret County.

Organizers of the group are all too familiar with the pain that comes with being a Gold Star family.

Maria Myers, who began the fundraising effort, lost her son in a helicopter crash.

She says in addition to creating a place that honors families who serve alongside their military member, the monument will also raise awareness.

Myers says, "We're trying to make the people of Carteret County and everywhere else more aware of the Gold Star families and what their sacrifice is."

So far the group has raised more than $20,000.

They're hoping to have the rest of the money in place to dedicate the monument on Veterans Day.
