NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE (WKEF/WRGT) - The National Museum of the U.S Air Force unveiled the nation’s 50th Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Tuesday morning.

The memorial serves as a symbol of sacrifice for families whose loved ones have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“This monument means so much to us. We lose our warriors and our loved ones who fight for freedom. Our loved ones may not return from war, and we don’t want to ever forget them,” Gold Star Family Member Paul Zanowick said.

The memorial, part of the Medal of Honor Foundation, was founded by Hershel Woody Williams, the sole surviving Medal of Honor Recipient from World War II.

Williams attended Tuesday’s event, paying tribute to Gold Star Families and their loved ones' sacrifice.

The monument is made of four granite panels, each representing homeland, family, patriotism, and sacrifice.

The Honorary Board Members hope the monument will bring comfort to Gold Star families, creating something special for them to remember the fallen heroes.

The monument is located in the museum’s Memorial Garden.
