It's been almost 25 years since a memorial has been built on the American Legion mall in downtown Indianapolis.

But after a lengthy approval process, the Indiana Gold Star Memorial Monument Committee has kicked off $150,000 fundraising campaign to build a memorial to honor Gold Star Families and Survivors. The monument to preserve the memory of fallen war heroes will be constructed at 760 North Pennsylvania Street.

The Indiana War Memorial Commission and the State of Indiana have approved the building site and design to erect the tribute. Monetary contributions are requested to help compete the memorial.

The monument is part of the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation ( that has a mission to build a tribute memorial to the sacrifices of families in every community across the United States. Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams will be an honored guest for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 and other festivities throughout Memorial Day weekend. Woody will be raising public awareness about what defines a Gold Star Family, honoring their sacrifices and making appearances to raise funds for the memorial.
