A World War II Medal of Honor recipient will be the speaker at the dedication later this week of the Gulf Coast Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. Hershel “Woody” Williams, who served as a marine corporal in World War II, saved countless American lives with his flame thrower in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and is the featured speaker at Saturday’s dedication at the new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at Guice Veterans Memorial Park in Biloxi. The Gold Star Memorial Monument honors the families who lost a relative in military service.

The memorial monument is a joint effort among the city of Biloxi, Keesler Federal Credit Union, the Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation and Gold Star families.

The city of Biloxi provided the location and construction upgrades, and Biloxi-based Keesler Federal Credit Union acquired the monument and is leading the dedication project.
