The City of Keller, Texas has dedicated a monument to Gold Star Families.
Gold Star families are families that have lost a relative in military service.
Erin Stillinger started working with the Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation when she was in 8th grade. She unveiled the monument on Sunday along with Medal of Honor recipient Matthew Williams.
Regina Sather's husband died after his humvee hit an IED in Iraq in 2004. She's raising their son and says parks like the one outside Keller Town Hall can give Gold Star Families a place to reflect together. “That connection was really powerful for us” said Sather.
“It is a fitting memorial to those who served for our country and were lost in their service” said Keller Mayor Pat McGrail at the dedication. McGrail says the monument is here for families to remember loved ones and to reflect, but also to educate others.
The monument includes four pillars for "homeland," "family," "patriot," and "sacrifice." The monument outside Keller Town Hall also has a battlefield cross.
