University of Memphis graduate, Captain Robert M Secher, was shot by a sniper while leading a patrol in Iraq on October 8, 2006. An expert artillery officer, Captain Secher was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with Combat V for valor for actions during his deployment.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps as a machine gunner when he was just 17, and received his commission as an artillery officer after completing his bachelor degree at the University of Memphis in 1998. Camp Hanson's Secher Hall in Okinawa, Japan is named in his memory.
He is remembered with love and deep respect by all who knew him.
